1496-1544. French poet, known for his
translation of the Psalms 1539-43. His
graceful, witty style became a model for
later writers of light verse. Born at Cahors,
he accompanied Francis I to Italy in 1524 and
was taken prisoner at Pavia; he was soon
released, and by 1528 was a salaried member
of the royal household. Suspected of heresy,
he fled to Turin, where he died.
