  1. 1496-1544. French poet, known for his
  2. translation of the Psalms 1539-43. His
  3. graceful, witty style became a model for
  4. later writers of light verse. Born at Cahors,
  5. he accompanied Francis I to Italy in 1524 and
  6. was taken prisoner at Pavia; he was soon
  7. released, and by 1528 was a salaried member
  8. of the royal household. Suspected of heresy,
  9. he fled to Turin, where he died.
